Removable partial dentures need proper care just like natural teeth do. Plaque and tartar can build up on dentures and spread to your natural teeth and gums, causing stains, bad breath, potential cavities and gum disease. For that reason, it is important to clean them every day to keep them looking their best. Follow the simple rules below to keep your pearly whites shining bright.
THE 8 GOLDEN RULES OF DENTURE CARE
Handle dentures carefully. Dentures can break easily if dropped and can become damaged if you bend the clasps while handling them. Use a gentle touch when removing, cleaning and reinserting your dentures.
Rinse your dentures often. If you remove your dentures and set them down for any reason, always rinse them off before putting them back in your mouth. This removes particles or bacteria that may have found their way onto your dentures.
Remove and rinse your dentures after eating. Running your dentures under warm water will help remove food particles from your dentures. Place a towel in the sink or fill it with water so they don’t break if you happen to drop them.
Brush at least once a day. Use a denture brush or an extra-soft toothbrush to apply a mild denture cleaner. If using toothpaste, ensure it is non-abrasive for dentures. Pay special attention to the clasps where bacteria collect. Be careful when brushing around the plastic areas; try not to bend the attachments.
Rinse your mouth and massage your gums. After brushing your partial dentures, brush and floss your natural teeth properly. Then rinse your mouth out and gently massage your gums with a clean soft washcloth or toothbrush.
Give them a soak. Soak them in a mild dental cleaner to remove tough stains, plaque, tartar and bacteria. Your mouth also needs a 6 to 8-hour break from your dentures to recover from wearing them all day, so most patients soak their dentures at night while they sleep.
Go for regular denture checkups. The bone density in your jaw changes over time and can cause dentures to fit differently. See your denture specialist regularly to prevent them from slipping and causing you discomfort. Make an appointment immediately if they become too loose.
See your dentist regularly too. Your natural teeth still need professional cleaning and check-ups by your dentist. Your dentist will also check your mouth, throat, and jawbone for other signs of oral health.
