CLEANING YOUR DENTURE IMPLANTS

Denture implants are surgically attached to your jawbone, so that they look and feel just like real teeth. And just like real teeth, you have to take care of them by practicing proper oral hygiene. While denture implants are not subject to tooth decay like natural teeth are, they can still develop a dangerous build-up of plaque. When plaque builds up along the gum line surrounding the denture implants, the gums can become inflamed and infected. As a consequence, not only could you experience denture implant failure, but you may also put yourself at risk of developing gum disease.

If you have dental implants, you need to know how to take care of them properly. The following tips can help you maintain your oral health and keep your denture implants in tip-top shape:

  • Brush your teeth 2 to 3 times each day.

  • Use an electric toothbrush – Electric (or battery-operated) toothbrushes provide a much more thorough clean than manual toothbrushes. Regular toothbrush users tend to miss the important areas around the gum line where plaque can develop. Using an electric brush helps you keep your teeth healthy and strong.

  • Avoid using whitening toothpaste – Whitening toothpaste is often abrasive and can scratch the surface of your denture implant and damage your natural enamel.

  • Use a mouth rinse after brushing – Especially at night before you go to bed.

  • Floss – You should aim to floss at least once a day. Floss in between both your natural teeth and your denture implants to make sure that no debris gets stuck between them.

  • Professional denture cleaning – If you have denture implants, you will need to have them professionally cleaned by your dentist at least once per year. In some cases, you’ll need to have them cleaned even more often to maintain your oral health.

  • See your dentist for regular check-ups – In addition to regular denture cleaning, you should receive regular check-ups at our Calgary dental clinic to make sure that there are no problems with your dental implants and that you’re maintaining good dental hygiene.
